Options abound when it comes to hiking and running in the Costa Brava and Girona Pyrenees. We can guarantee you mile upon mile of awe-inspiring sensations as you explore the trails, day trips and mountain crossings on offer. Take your time and breathe in the beauty of a spectacular and diverse natural landscape that stretches all the way from the coast to the peaks of the Pyrenees.

The Girona province’s unique terrain provides a host of paths, trails and passes to suit all tastes, ages and fitness levels. The perfect setting for leisurely strolls and long walks, as well as for those who prefer to take in the scenery as part of a trail run or are looking for the challenge of a scramble through some high mountain terrain.

One of the Girona province’s most iconic trails is, without a doubt, the much-loved GR 92 coastal paths that run along the entire coast of the Costa Brava, past beaches, coves and coastal towns and taking in stunning beauty spots, such as Cap de Creus, Aiguamolls de l’Empordà and Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Parks.

The network of long distance hiking trails also includes other age-old routes steeped in history that trace mountain ranges and peaks, such as the GR 11, the Pyrenean Trail that runs from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, passing through idyllic landscapes, such as Núria valley and Capçaleres del Ter i del Freser Natural Park.

Thematic routes

Pick up a map of the Costa Brava and Girona Pyrenees and discover the extensive range of local trails that criss-cross the region, such as the greenways, the Pirinexus cross-border route, the historic paths of Itinerànnia, the Baix Empordà trail network, the Ter Route and the Girona section of the The Way of Saint James.

Mountain stage trails

If you like a long-distance challenge, whether hiking or running, tackling one of the mountain passes that cross the Pyrenees is an unmissable experience. Hike among the more than 25 peaks at an altitude of 2,500 m and spend the night in one of the mountain refuges or small villages along the way. The list of possible routes is long and, since each has its own unique hidden charms, we can only advise you to clock up as many as you possibly can:

Serra de Monestirs (65 km), Refugis del Torb (73 km), Bastions (105 km), Els Tres Refugis (52 km), Ruta dels Estanys Amagats (73 km), Colliure-Cadaqués (72 km) and Marxa del Parc (35 km).
