Culture

Travelling around this small corner of the world will take you on a fabulous journey of cultural experiences that are sure to blow you away

Photographer David Borrat

The Costa Brava and Girona Pyrenees are guardians of numerous genuine treasures that will put a smile of the face of any cultural tourism enthusiast. If that sounds like you, it’s our pleasure to present our extraordinary historical and artistic heritage, which includes more than 550 heritage assets.

Going right back to the beginning, walk in the footsteps of our ancestors at the archaeologically significant and outstandingly beautiful prehistoric sites across the Costa Brava, such as the megalithic monuments of Albera, Iberian towns like Ullastret and the Graeco-Roman ruins of Empúries.

Then journey on to the Middle Ages, with an impressive display of Romanesque art. The monasteries of Sant Pere de Rodes and Santa Maria de Ripoll along with Hostalric and Montsoriu castles stand as testimony to a golden age in Catalonia’s history. Similarly, step back in time with a wander through the medieval villages of Peralada, Pals, Santa Pau and Besalú to admire the impressive display of excellently preserved architectural heritage.

The cultural activities on offer in the Girona province also include a whole range of museums housing the work of illustrious local artists, such as those affiliated with the Olot school of painting and master of surrealism, Salvador Dalí. If your schedule allows, we recommend you treat yourself to the full Dalinian Triangle experience by visiting the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, the Salvador Dalí House Museum in Portlligat and Gala Dalí Castle in Púbol.

But culture is not all about the past. It is vibrant and exciting, and here you have the chance to enjoy traditional festivals classified as being of national interest, as well as local fairs and markets and the extensive calendar of arts festivals spanning music, theatre, magic and many other disciplines that infuse the Costa Brava and the Girona Pyrenees with colour and life all year round.
