The stunning scenery waiting to be discovered around Camós in Pla de l'Estany is certain to come as a welcome surprise.
Perhaps due to its diminutive proportions, perhaps because it has slipped under the radar in terms of publicity, perhaps due to its proximity to the busy Banyoles Lake… whatever the case may be, the trails in this town do not appear in many of the hiking guides you will find for Girona, the Costa Brava or the Girona Pyrenees. But this hidden gem really is worth a visit!
Walking the Camós Church Trail is an excellent way to get to know this special little place, wandering forest tracks and shady paths that open up to provide spectacular panoramic views of the region.
It is a medium to low difficulty walk across gently sloping terrain that can be enjoyed with family or friends. The whole of the approximately 3-kilometre-long route is well signposted and can be completed in an hour and a half. A real treat of a walk!
The route starts at the church of Santa Maria de Camós, which is still known locally by its former name, Santa Teresa. You will feel yourself begin to relax as soon as you arrive, breathing in the peace of the place and already surrounded by the beauty of nature that works its magic whatever the season. From here, follow the signs for Plaça de les Bruixes (Witches Square), which marks the halfway point of the trail. Rather than a man-made square, this is a clearing in the middle of the forest, located right next to the ruins of the old Casa Farnés farmhouse, which for many years stood watch as the children of the village made their way to school. The clearing is so named because local people used to believe these natural spaces were places where witches danced, which explained why the grass never grew there.
Following the trail further along the dirt track, with native plant life all around, we eventually come to the town’s other religious building, the church of Sant Vicenç de Camós, which, during these months of spring, is a celebration of red poppies. Stop a while, read about the church’s unique history on the information panels and, when you are ready, retrace your steps to head back to the start of the trail.
As we said before, it’s a fantastic trip, you won’t be disappointed!
