In Catalonia there are mainly two categories of rural tourism establishments: rural or agrotourism houses, and rural accommodation.

The first, owned by farmers or countryside dwellers who have set up part of the house to receive guests, are official and legalised establishments and are marked with yellow-brown signs. They allow visitors to experience rural life first-hand through accommodation in independent or shared farmhouses or town houses. These offer everything from breakfast to activities such as visits to farms or gastronomic workshops, with the aim of sharing agricultural culture and local traditions.

On the other hand, rural accommodation provides legalised establishments indicated with green “TR” signs. These are town houses and farmhouses, which also include rural houses which are available for complete rental, ideal for stays with family or friends, providing privacy and accessibility to amenities such as a swimming pool or barbecue.

All the options are also differentiated by the categories of wheat spikes, based on the quality of the facilities and services, with establishments that vary from 1 to 5 wheat spikes, depending on the quality of their facilities, equipment and services. The rural houses also display their category on their websites or on the websites of the Associations and Guilds of which they are part.
