A large plain watered by the Fluvià River is set in the midst of the spectacular landscapes of the Garrotxa region. The village of Argelaguer is found on this plain. In the past, Montpalau Castle protected the village from a hilltop on the other side of the river. All that remains of this castle are a few ruins. However, its small chapel, dedicated to Santa Magdalena, still stands. On the top of another hill you will find the bell tower of the Mare de Déu del Guilar. If you climb this hill on the 1st of May, you will be able to join the large popular gathering or aplec in the sanctuary area. Offerings, a rice lunch and a dance all make up part of this memorable day.
