Pronouncing the name of this picturesque town in Alt Empordà and that of its residents, the vilamacolumencs and vilamacolumenques, is no easy task! Vilamacolum is set in a flat area where the Pyrenees, most prominently the Canigó peak, can be made out on the edge of a sweeping horizon that stretches as far as the Mediterranean. This is a great place for pedalling along riverbanks and for walking in closes (pasture land enclosed by irrigation channels and hedgerows) and in the vast fields of apple trees, corn and cereals. The icing on the cake is the small Romanesque church of Santa Maria, a must-see attraction
