There are many interesting facts about the town of La Vajol. First of all, at 546 metres it’s the highest town in the county of Alt Empordà and the surrounding forests are ideal for walks and mountain biking. Secondly, you’ll be surprised by the architecture of the old quarter, inspired by Pyrenean mountain dwellings; houses with pens and stables on the ground floor and an outdoor staircase leading up to the living space on the first floor. Last of all, did you know that the smallest town in the county was the capital of Spain for a few days? No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you! It was very briefly the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic and of the Spanish government, subsequently forming part of the route to exile in France.
