The Garrotxa Volcanic Area Natural Park was protected in 1982 as a result of the popular demonstrations to defend the natural heritage and the recovery of the Catalan institutions. It has a significant population and a dynamic economic activity which is highly diversified and harmonious with the environment.

The population has preserved a strong identity, with an entrepreneurial spirit, a long artistic tradition, deeply-rooted, highly participative festivals and popular traditions, excellent cuisine that makes the most of the local, quality produce and a serene, balanced landscape. The natural park regulates and encourages the economic activities to make them compatible with the preservation of this unique territory. The damp climate, particularly found in the Olot basin, means there is exceptional plant coverage which has protected it from the erosion of the volcanoes at the same time as favouring a great diversity of flora and fauna.

It is the best preserved volcanic region on the Iberian Peninsula, with some forty well-conserved volcanoes, the craters and lava flow of which can be observed and walked over thanks to several signposted itineraries and routes. Volcanic activity is considered to be inactive but not extinct.

The park is accredited with:

A collaboration commitment between the entity and the territory to work on responsible, sustainable and quality tourism management.
