Cala del Crit

Mont-ras, Baix Empordà

Legend has it that the name comes from the scream (crit) that was made by the young farmer’s daughter as she was kidnapped by the Saracens.

Legend has it that the name comes from the scream (crit) that was made by the young farmer’s daughter as she was kidnapped by the Saracens.

This is a cove with a legend behind it. They say -and there are several versions- that in the age of pirates, the Saracens arrived at this coast. When they were about to leave, they heard the rooster of a nearby farmhouse which alerted them that there might be booty there. As they fled, they took the daughter of the farmer, whose cry (‘crit’) gave its name to the beach. Whether or not you believe in the legend, the beach of Crit is located in an area of great natural beauty and scenic attractions. To get there you have to walk quite a while. The road, which starts from an intersection near the Cap Roig botanical garden, is likely closed to traffic. The beach is about 150 metres in length and is composed mainly of gravel and coarse sand. Still preserved there are some ancient fisherman’s huts.
