Sant Joan de les Abadesses, a town that grew around a monastery in the county of Ripollès. The town’s history is synonymous with that of its monastery, of the different communities of monks and nuns who lived there, and of the legends and tales told about them. One of the most famous is the legend of Count Arnau, who is said to have fallen in love with one of the abbesses who lived there. The town’s past is still palpable in many of its streets and buildings, in the remains of the old walls and in the picturesque Pont Vell (Old Bridge) that stretches over the Ter River.
