Like so many other towns, Albons sprang up around a castle and parish church, in this case the church of Sant Cugat, set atop a small hill on the Baix Empordà plain. Today it’s a place for enjoying a gentle pace of life, walking or cycling among crop fields that exude the essence of the county. If you have to choose just one day to visit Albons, make sure it’s the 13th October; you’ll be able to join local residents on a pilgrimage to the Romanesque chapel of Sant Grau to pay tribute to the town’s patron saint.
