Carrer Sant Quirze, 16, 17730 Llers, Espanya
The municipality of Llers, set among a series of small hills and mountain ranges, is fed by the waters of numerous streams. This area marked the borders of the former counties of Besalú and Empúries, which explains why it was a land of castles, the most fortified in Empordà. The town’s castle was supported by a surrounding network of eleven castles, many of which, such as the Llers and Hortal castles, now lie in ruins. Include these on your list of places to visit, together with the small church of Sant Quirze d’Olmells – nestled in the heart of the forest – or the magnificent dry stone wall heritage of the municipality, which includes 46 huts listed as Assets of Local Cultural Interest.
