In this sixth Girona stage of GR 83 we will reach the French Vallespir. We will go to the mining town of La Menera, walk by the shady beech forests near the Sanctuary of Mare de Déu del Coral and continue up the Guilla pass to descend to the beautiful village of Prats de Molló. We must keep in mind that the itinerary that we will follow is very similar to that made by thousands of exiles from the Spanish Civil War in the winter of 1939, who were persecuted by the Franco regime. It is said that up to 450,000 people crossed the border through the different passes of the eastern Pyrenees: Ares pass, Malrem pass, Lille pass, Pertús and Portbou. Despite not enjoying nature, when you are at these places one cannot stop thinking about the exiles who were forced to leave their homes. Many of the inhabitants of these towns of the Vallespir are the descendants of those brave ones who looked escaped risking their lives.
