At the foot of the highest peaks of the eastern Pyrenees, following the course of the River Segre – a natural mountain pass – we find Llívia, the former capital of the Cerdanya region. Following the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659) and the subsequent territorialisation of the enclave with that of Bayonne (1866-68), an area spanning 12.9 km², as well as the forests, lakes and pastures of Carlit, Llívia ended up completely surrounded by French territory. Home to the only Roman forum in the whole of the Pyrenees, its rich and extensive heritage, from its castle ruins, the Bernat de So Tower, the old town and the church, all stand testimony to its medieval past.
