Plaça Comtes d'Empúries, 1, Bellcaire d'Empordà, Espanya
Like other towns on the Empordà plain, Bellcaire d’Empordà is perched on top of a hill overlooking the plain. It boasts an old medieval fortress, Comtes d’Empúries Castle, which was the former residence of the Count of Empúries and is listed as a Cultural Asset of National Interest and Historic National Monument. It is also home to a pre-Romanesque treasure, Sant Joan de Bedenga’s church, among other places of significant historic interest and value, each fitted with its own information panel. And, as elsewhere in Empordà, it’s a great place to visit for a well-deserved break and, for example, explore some of the trails on the Montgrí massif or stroll along the shores of the Rec del Molí. As happened in other places in the region, the local lake was drained in the eighteenth century so that the land could be farmed but visitors can still walk around the perimeter of the old lake, among the cultivated fields and fruit trees.
