Cantallops is set on the southern slope of the Sierra de l’Albera in an area where the mountain landscape gives way to a forested plain of cork, holm and common oaks. It is currently a small town with 300 inhabitants where tranquillity, the north wind and the living silence of nature are all the norm. The town grew up around the ancient Cantallops Castle, first documented in the thirteen century, of which only partial ruins now remain; a fragment of the wall and a single tower that was converted into a bell tower for Sant Esteve parish church in the nineteenth century. The Requesens mountain borders the town to the north, situated in the heart of the Albera Natural Site of National Interest (PNIN). Another highlight is the set of dolmens to be found in the area of Cantallops, La Jonquera, Capmany, Espolla and Sant Climent.
