Les Planes d’Hostoles is a municipality set in a valley right next to the Natural Park of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone. The town played a key role in one of the most important episodes of the War of the Remences (peasant farmers), an uprising against the abusive feudal lords. Two of the fortified castles where battles were waged can be visited today. Only a few ruins of the castle of Hostoles remain, while the chapel of the castle of Puig-alder (chapel of Sant Salvador) is still standing. If mediaeval history is not your thing, nature has plenty to offer you in this area. An excursion to the natural pools of the Brugent river, for example, will refresh your body and mind.
