Fontcoberta is a very curious town in Pla de l’Estany. Despite being situated inland it has a beach. Espolla beach, as it’s called, is actually a seasonal pond, which means that doesn’t always have water. What’s more, the water doesn’t come from a river but rather from underground currents that reach the surface at certain times of year. Espolla is one of just a handful of beaches and lagoons of this kind in Catalonia, which makes Fontcoberta well worth visiting. And while you’re there, make the most of the chance to visit the church of Sant Feliu with its magnificent bell tower, and in December don’t miss the living nativity scene of Vilavenut.
